There are only three distinct versions of the diminished T – ½ scale and these are conventionally named as C, C# and D. Figures 10.3 and 10.4 show all three of these scales :

They form a pattern which is easy to visualize on the circle. First visualize a diminished seventh chord on the tonic of the corresponding major scale and then add another diminished chord on the IV degree of the major scale.

Try this example of determining the eight notes in the tone - semitone diminished scale in F. The four notes of the diminished seventh chord on I are : F, G#, B, D and the four notes of the diminished chord on IV are : Bb, Db, E, G. Combined, these give : F G G# Bb B Db D E. With enharmonic respelling to avoid mixing flats and sharps, we have the

F w-½ diminished scale : F G G# A# B C# D E

You can see straight away that this scale is a mode of the D T-½ diminished scale. So there is little incentive to construct any other than the three basic forms.

The improvising musician will probably not be concerned unduly with having these notes in scale order nor necessarily too worried about mixing sharps and flats.
